Week 18

Hi Parents,

I hope you all have had a wonderful and relaxing Winter break with your families. I truly appreciate all of the generous gifts I received from you all. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Reminders:
-We have a field trip to the Children’s Museum this Friday. Your child should wear their tie-dye class t-shirt and bring a sack lunch. I am also suggesting that you send a large snack so that the students can have a part of the snack before we go to the museum since we will be eating lunch later than usual.
-If you are chaperoning, please be sure you are VIPS approved. Also, you will need to pay for your own admittance. Since we have larger classes than in years past, it would be very helpful if you could drive (or the chaperones could carpool together) so we have enough room on the bus.
-Tuesday is Library day. Please be sure you bring your students library book back so that they may check out a new one.

Reading/Language Arts:
We will be learning about the long e spelling pattern/word family of –eep. We will read and sing Two Sleeping Sheep and add it to our poetry notebook. We will discuss alternate ways to spell the long e spelling pattern such as ea.
Writing:
We will be working on fixing and fancying up an older piece of writing. We will eventually publish this piece after we have edited and fixed up our writing.

Math:
The students will be introduced to the Pattern-Block Template.  What is a pattern-block template and how is it used? What are the names of the shapes on the template?
The students will be introduced to addition terminology and symbols using number stories and counters.  What does this symbol (+) mean?
The students will be introduced to interrupted counting. What does it mean to interrupt someone? Can we start counting from any number and continue counting?

IB- How We Organize Ourselves:
We will bring our IB Unit of Inquiry into the central idea “Jobs are essential for the well-being of a community.” to a close this week.

Social Studies:
-We will visit the Children’s Museum Metropolis exhibit and get hands on experience with how and why jobs are essential for the community.
- What buildings are essential to our community and why? We will discuss important buildings in our community and why they are important. What would happen if we didn’t have that building? We will then create our own community representation.

Science:
-What is the difference between night and day? What causes it to change from day to night and night to day?  We will conduct an experiment using a globe and flashlight and discuss our observations as we turn the globe and leave the flashlight on one spot of the globe.

·        What causes day and night?
·        Can you name a place that is experiencing night when we are experiencing day?
·        List some nighttime activities; daytime activities
·        Are some of those activities the same?  Different?
·        Are the activities determined by whether there is light?
